Ray LaMontagne begon als 19-jarige met een 65-urige werkweek in een schoenenfabriek. Nadat hij ‘Treetop Flyer’ van Stephen Still op radio voorbij hoorde komen nam hij ontslag en ging hij voor een carrière in de muziek. Hij bracht in 2004 zijn debuutalbum ‘Trouble’ uit waaraan hij werkte met Ethan Johns. Hierop volgden de albums Till The Sun Turns Black, Gossip in the Grain, God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise en Supernova. 

Voor zijn zesde album werkte hij samen met My Morning Jacket zanger Jim James.
