“The Beach Boys' Best Unsurpassed Masters is a four CD set of outtakes, rough mixes & demos recorded between 1962 & 1969 for Capitol Records. It chronicles nearly every studio album they made for Capitol Records and includes a complete outtake version of their famous SMiLE album. Best Unsurpassed Masters is a 'best of' collection of the expansive 75 disc Unsurpassed Masters series which was released in a limited edition of 1,000 copies in the 1990s.

Originally acquired by a technician who was hired by Brian Wilson to make Sony Betamax audio copies from Brian's library of the Capitol Records master tapes during the production of the movie An American Band, the recordings did not add hiss to the transfers because Betamax used something called Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) which created noiseless recording. It's a precursor to modern digital recording. The technician didn't do anything with his copies of the material until decades passed and this remarkable series of releases saw the light of day. Many of the songs include one complete instrumental take and a preliminary vocal overdub. and some include multiple takes, including remakes.”
