Post Description
Martha & the Vandellas racked up an impressive slate of Motown classics that included the Top Five smashes "(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave" and "Dancing in the Street," plus "Nowhere to Run," "I'm Ready for Love," "Jimmy Mack," and "Honey Chile," all of which made the R&B Top Five. Despite the occasional personnel turnover, and the fact that rivals the Supremes had become Motown's female group of choice, Martha & the Vandellas' run of success continued through 1967. Unfortunately, feeling the pressure to keep up, Reeves developed an addiction to prescription drugs, and in 1968 a bad acid trip prefigured a nervous breakdown that slowed the Vandellas' momentum even further. Although they continued to perform and record for several more years, they never matched the success of old and disbanded in December 1972 after a farewell concert in Detroit.
In the history of European pop music only a small number of bands from black Africa succeeded in arousing a certain amaount of interest in the "old world". Even fewer were lucky enough to hit big thousands of miles away from home. One of the scarce exceptions were The Soulful Dynamics, originally a seven-piece, who - despite the fact that they secured several hits - never made it into the history books of pop music. In the mid-60´s a bunch of amateur musicians by the name of THE DYNAMIC CLUB had won a talent contest in their hometown Monrovia, the capital of Liberia/Africa; soon after they turned pro, and became the no. 1 outfit in their country.
Encouraged by the lasting success they decided to seek fame and fortune in America, but at the last minute they changed plans and headed for Hamburg, Germany, instead where the drummer´s sister worked for the Liberian embassy. In 1969 they embarked on the long voyage and days later reached Hamburg harbour. The band´s line-up consisted of Emanuel Obdekah (vocals), Olu Igenuma (keyboards), Frederic "Andy" Anderson (born 31.1.1947, guitar/vocals), Benjamin Mason (born 3.9.1949, drums), Molley C. Morgan (born 6.3.1948, bass, percussion), Ernest J. G. Clinton (born 28.7.1949, lead vocals, guitar) and Manfred "Maxi" Free (born 5.6.1946, lead guitar). Soon after their arrival the band played several gigs in the Hamburg area, and a guy called Rolf Baierle (later of Roba Music Publishing) secured them a contract with Phillips, who renamed the septed SOULFUL DYNAMICS. Their musical style turned out to be a perfect cross-over, combining highly danceable African folklore with catchy pop tunes, beaty rhhythms & pure fun. In January 1970 the group´s single "Mademoiselle Ninette" became an instant No.1 hit in Germany which was followed six months later by a Top 20 smash called "Annabella" and by another hit ("Birdy") in December.
By this time Obdekah and Igenuma decided to leave, and the band kept on as a five-piece. In 1971 the band left Philips and signed with Decca who released a batch of 45´s until 1974 with "Saah-Saah-Kumba-Kumba" and "Coconuts from Congoville" making the charts at #25 (1971) and #47 (1972), respectively (the latter being credited to Benjamin Mason & The Soulful Dynamics, and waxed in German as well).
Until 1977 futher singles were laid down for CBS ("Jungle People", "Sugar Baby", 1976) and Metronome ("Mirabelle", "Shake Shake Shake", "Wanna Love You", 1977) but no lastin success though the band was still big on the german live circuit. In 1977 the Soulful Dynamics called it a day. Five years later singer Benjamin Mason reformed the Band in Hamburg with new musicians pursuing a comeback with a song called "Did You See My Wife".
