For an author to be asked to condense the war at sea during the Second World War into approximately four hundred and fifty photographs is to be asked to squeeze a gallon into the proverbial pint pot. The choice has not been easy and when one photograph has been selected, often another three or four equally worthy photographs have had to be discarded. For those who fail to find the ship or campaign in which they participated within these pages, I can only apologise. The photographs have been selected from a number of archives throughout the world and I am deeply grateful to the staffs of those institutions and my various "sleuthers", who have helped to find many of the illustrations. From 3 September 1939 until 2 September 1945 war raged in every ocean of the world. It is obviously impossible to provide a comprehensive coverage of every theatre or engagement but it is hoped that the photographs in this book will give some idea of the nature of naval war from 1939 to 1945.
