Post Description

We were already aware of Rodrigo Leão's passion for soundtracks. Cinema becomes a series of soundtrack excerpts for several movies. Leaving the latin lyrics behind, the only tie with the early stages of his career lies on the instrumentals - even tough they are revised under his new line up, which remains the same since Alma Mater. And there are, once again, songs.
Cinema is, certainly, the most accomplished of Rodrigo Leão's records. And this means one thing only - this is the record on which he finds himself completely and the one on which his absolute uniqueness gains more strength. On this Cinema Rodrigo appears as a self voiced composer, of ripe age and as diverse as possible. Many are the roads he chose for his music and, mazingly, they all begin and end on him.
Rodrigo Leão is now a 'european' composer, regardless of the reducing effect that labels could confer. He shares the same vision and the same passion of names such as Yann Tiersen or Emir Kusturica. With an enormous advantage: he is none of them.
It isn't by chance that Beth Gibbons or Ryuichi Sakamoto have agreed to participate on Cinema. These collaborations have even exceeded expectations. Listen to Lonely Carousel with Gibbons assuming a new balcanic accent, or to the sweet melody which Sakamoto found for Antonio, in order to lull the first words ever pronounced by Rodrigo's son. But there is more: brazilian singer Rosa Passos lends her voice to Rosa, one this record's most beautiful songs; belgian artist Helena Noguerra adds sweetness ans sensuality to songs such as Jeux d'amour and La Fête and
portuguese singer Sonia Tavares´ complicity is self evident on songs like Happiness, a big band theme which could have been filmed by David Lynch.

Getagged als prog omdat: Assembling sole compositions constructed by different inspirations, Rodrigo Leão constructed his own way of creating music, somewhere in between progressive and experimental electronic soundings. One of the most important composers and performers of the late '90s in Portugal, Rodrigo Leão started his career by working with some of the most prominent Portuguese groups of that time.(Madredeus a.o.)
