Funk is a musical style that originated in the mid to late 1960s when the New World African musicians blended soul music, soul jazz and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music. Funk places less stress on melody and harmony and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground.
It is said that the world of Down Under, Australia, is in the 21st century the hottest frontier on the boldest funk & soul scene at the moment with bands like The Bamboos, Cookin' on 3 Burners, Deep Street Soul and Kylie Auldist stirring up a storm in the southern hemisphere and beyond alongside DJs like Russ Dewbury. The most likely candidates to become the brightest stars of this fast growing scene are new Sydney-based combo DOJO CUTS featuring the young and powerful Sasha (Alex) aka Roxie Ray on vocals ... a new soulful little queen has been born!
Their first single "The 123s", from their debut album "DOJO CUTS feat Roxie Ray", was released on RK in April 2009 AD with a cover of Marie "Queenie" Lyons sister funk classic "See and Don't See" on the flip side. If you dig Sharon Jones and Nicole Willis & the Soul Investigators you'd better watch out for Dojo Cuts.
UK based Gabriel Roth and Neal Sugarman have already declared themselves fans of the band so they can't be wrong! "Wonderful earthy vocals and crisp playing. This is a very promising debut for these Aussie funksters. Definitely going to be played on the show".
