Martha, een alleenstaande vrouw, is samen met haar vader op vakantie als hij sterft aan een hartaanval. Terug thuis gaat ze voor haar ondankbare moeder zorgen die haar als een "lelijke oude vrijster" ziet en haar continu beledigt. Uiteindelijk accepteert ze een huwelijksaanbod van Helmut, een man die haar respectloos en gewelddadig behandelt. Naïef als ze is denkt Martha nog dat hij wel zal veranderen maar als ze een oude collega van hem ontmoet, Kaiser, vertelt deze haar dat Helmut een echte sadist is. Als ze Kaiser nogmaals ontmoet is Martha ervan overtuigd dat Helmut haar gevolgd is en haar zal vermoorden.
