Post Description
A classy, sprawling PBS documentary about Bill and Hillary Clinton has been edited into a three-part series for BBC2 and it's a fascinating watch, a reminder of all the contradictions the US president embodied. The contributors agree that as a politician, Bill Clinton had inspiring vision and a razor-sharp mind, but was prone to gross errors of judgement. That made for a career marked by a pattern of rise and fall: it was almost, says one Washington veteran, as if politics came so naturally to him he had to erect his own hurdles. Another points to what made him the perennial comeback kid, his unyielding "stick-to-it-ness".
As the narrative spools back through Clinton's history we get wonderful glimpses of his fiery upbringing, his relationship with Hillary and his early political career in Arkansas. There's an A-list of contributors, and clips that feel oddly nostalgic, but it's an American documentary, so be prepared for the orchestral soundtrack that wafts under everything.
