The story is about Rajunath (Kamal Hassan) who's very mischevious, lazy and a liar. He is the only son of his father Shambunath (Shivraj) the poor village postman. Raju used to lie very often to tease and have fun with the villagers. Suddenly, fire catches to the stage where the play was going on and Raju's father gets severe skin burnt. In order to save his father's life he asks the villagers to help, but everyone thought it to be another of his jokes and no one came to help. His father dies and now Raju swears not to lie again. Raju comes to stay with her sister Malti (Tanuja) whose family consists of her husband (Sujit Kumar), mother-in-law and her children. Raju is being treated as good for nothing by Malti's mother-in-law and her husband. They start believing that Raju is unlucky for them. Everyday he is being treated as servant. Soon they throw out Raju from there home. One day, Dhanpat Rai (Sanjeev Kumar) who's a rich buisnessman who lives with his wife Laxmi and her brother, Balwant (Raza Murad) meets Raju. Dhanpat Rai used to go for horse racing and would always lose. Dhanpat Rai sees Raju's face in moring and one the same day, wins at the race. He considers Raju lucky and adopts him. Raju brings good luck to Rai's family. Rai's wife become pregnant after a long time. But Balwant gets jealous of Raju as being the apple of Rai's eye. Rai also organises the eye operation of Raju's blind flower vendor girlfriend Naini (Poonam Dhillon). But when they are about to marry, Raju get diagnosed with a lung cancer. He hides from Naini and advises her to marry someone else. Over there Balwant plants to kill Rai and Laxmi's new born baby. Will Raju be able to stop Balwant? Will he be able to marry Naini?
