In the 20th century the Forbidden City underwent a remarkable and miraculous transformation. The century started with the death of a dynasty and the eviction of the last emperor, Pu Yi. His abdication in 1912 marked the end of thousands of years of imperial rule in China and 500 years of the Forbidden City being the empires capital. When the palace was re-opened as a museum in 1925, such was the crush of visitors that there were traffic jams in Beijing. But the Japanese aggression of 1931 put the museum on the run. 13,000 crates of artefacts were boxed up and shipped out of the Forbidden City in three great convoys. For over five years they traversed the country, often only one step ahead of the Japanese invaders. Most of the artifacts returned to Beijing after the Second World War, but by then the palace had fallen into calamitous disrepair. Renovation began in the 1950s and today the Forbidden City is recognized as one of the worlds great heritage sites. A new huge restoration project, taking place 600 years after the start of construction of the original building, is underway today. We are there as remarkable and unexpected discoveries are being made as ancient techniques are combined with modern technology to restore the greatest palace on earth.
