This is the original anime space adventure, the one that started it all! 

This is the first Yamato feature film, produced for release in Japanese theaters, where it broke all previous attendance records for animated films and launched a saga that is now legendary the world over.

Space Battleship Yamato is the warp-speed version of television's first Yamato series, known in the US as Star Blazers: The Quest for Iscandar. This seamless motion picture format features the episodic adventures most spectacular battles, dramatic personal encounters, intimate moments, and the unparalleled suspense of 
an intergalactic race against time to save Earth from total destruction.

To avoid nuclear fallout, survivors of a surprise attack from the Planet Gamilus are living in underground cities...but the radiation is seeping ever downward, and humanity's days are numbered. The Yamato has only one year to make a 148,000 light year voyage from Earth to the planet Iscandar and return with a neutralizer that will cleanse Earth's irradiated atmosphere.

It is in this seminal feature film that we first meet Susumu Kodai, Shima Daisuke, Yuki Mori, Captain Okita, Desler, the mysterious Stasha of Iscandar, and all the others. Yamato survives one peril after another on it's long journey, with time counting ever downward to the end of life as we know it!
