Op 6 februari 1945, twee minuten voor half drie 's nachts, werd op Jamaica in Nine Miles, provincie Saint Ann, Robert Nesta Marley geboren. Zijn moeder, het 18-jarige donkere tienermeisje Cedella Malcolm, was van Afrikaanse afkomst; zijn vader, de 50-jarige blanke kapitein in het leger Norval Marley, had Engelse ouders. Norval was opzichter voor de Britse koloniale macht op het gebied van landbouw. Bob zag zijn vader, die overleed toen Bob tien was, slechts sporadisch. Volgens Bobs moeder had Bob Marley zijn zachtaardige karakter en geringe lichaamslengte geërfd van zijn vader. Eind jaren vijftig verhuisde zijn moeder op zoek naar werk naar Trenchtown, een sloppenwijk van Kingston. Bob ging met haar mee.
Bob sprak veel over muziek met Clarence Malcolm (een familielid), een voormalige gitarist. Op zijn tiende, terwijl hij nog naar school ging, verdiende Bob soms wat geld met zingen op straat. Zijn gitaar maakte hij van afvalhout. Hij had veel vrienden en was een mooie, aardige jongen. Ofschoon hij niet slecht op school was, voetbalde hij liever.
