Kleine waarschuwing vooraf: ken je James Brown alleen van stampende tracks als Sex Machine, Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, Turnit A Loose, Cold Sweat of dergelijke tracks, dan is dit album misschien helemaal niets voor jou. Op "Messing With The Blues" duikt James Brown in de historie van de blues en speelt tracks uit de jaren '40 tot '50 van de vorige eeuw. Het album wordt ingeleid en uitgeluid door het relaxte "Like It Is, Like It Was" waarin James Brown samen met een paar bandleden al pratend (en zingend) terugkijkt op vroeger. Alleen voor de liefhebber dus.
