Tchaikovsky - Symphony 4 - Capriccio Italien - RPO, Gatti
Daniele Gatti's music directorship of the Royal Philharmonic is generally considered to be the finest thing to happen to the orchestra in years. Just how far he's managed to turn them into a force to be reckoned with can be gauged by this powerhouse Tchaikovsky disc, the second in a series for Harmonia Mundi.
You could argue that his speeds for the Fourth are on the fast side and that his treatment of the slow movement is unyielding, though taken as a whole, the performance's hurtling momentum and heightened sense of drama just sweep you away. The Capriccio Italien, meanwhile, is all suave elegance and flamboyant wit, far removed from conventional views of the piece as being simply a tunefully entertaining warhorse. The playing is wonderful in both cases.
