Zeezenders The Offshore Radio Years volume 4

The abandoned wartime forts off the British coast were quickly seized by the offshore broadcasters, as a more stable base than a radio ship.
Radio Invicta claimed the Red Sands army fort, then changed its name to KING radio, and then to the successful to “middle of the road” music Radio 390. Radio Essex used a smaller fort, and aimed at a more local market. It also claimed to be the first 24 hour pop station.
Tower Radio also used one of the smaller naval forts, and had ambitious plans for a TV service.
In the North, businessman Tommy Shields, decided there should be a truly Scottish radio station and purchased a former lightship the Comet, for Radio Scotland
