De film speelt zich af in het Sierra Leone van 1999, als het land verwikkeld is in een gewelddadige burgeroorlog. Danny Archer is een smokkelaar die gespecialiseerd is in het verkopen van zogenaamde "bloed-diamanten", waarmee de rebellen gefinancierd werden.
