Story:

Movie Queen -- Linda Lin Dai plays both mother and son in this fanciful adaptation of one of China's most famous fables. Linda is a goddess who falls in love with a young scholar (16-year-old Cheng Pei-pei, in her unusual debut role) and gives birth to a baby son. Fast forward fourteen years, and the son (played by Linda Lin Dai) seeks to unravel the mystery behind his mysterious mother and the mythical lotus lamp. Another future movie queen, then 15-year-old Li Ching, makes an early screen appearance as a heavenly maiden, and Hong Kong's favorite fat comedienne, Lydia Shum, is also on hand as bullying bad boy. A truly lavish production in Eastmancolor and Shawscope, The Lotus Lamp took over two years to complete and was not released till the first anniversary of Linda's tragic suicide at age 29.
