Phish is een Amerikaanse rock band die bekendstaat om zijn live reputatie als jamband die door uitgebreide jams en improvisatie aan bestaande nummers en nieuw materiaal steeds weer een nieuwe dimensie toe weet te voegen. Door deze experimenteerdrift laat de muziek zelf zich moeilijk binnen een hokje plaatsen en worden zij ook in dit aspect veelal vergeleken met The Grateful Dead.
De band ontstond in 1983 op de University of Vermont (in zijn huidige samenstelling speelt de band samen sinds 1985). Phish heeft vier bandleden: Trey Anastasio (zang/gitaar), Mike Gordon (zang/bas), Jon Fishman (drums), and Page McConnell (toetsen).Zij speelden twintig jaar samen tot zij in augustus 2004 besloten uit elkaar te gaan. In maart 2009 vond er echter een reünie concert plaats in het Hampton Coliseum in Hampton (Virginia), sindsdien treden zij weer regelmatig samen op.

BACKGROUND:
The Clifford Ball was the first of a series of seven now legendary weekend-long concert events hosted by Phish (the last wasCoventry in 2004) and was named for the aviation pioneer. On each of the two show days, August 16-17, Phish performed threesets and an encore to a crowd of over 70,000 fans, making it that year's biggest concert and temporarily making rural Plattsburghthe ninth largest city in New York state and Phish was the only band on the bill. This phenomenal festival was captured on film,and now unfurls on a new 7-DVD set from Rhino featuring over nine hours of incredible footage and inspired jams including abonus disc packed with rarities, interviews, and more.
DVD Facts
7-DVD boxed set captures the 1996 Phish festival The Clifford Ball, named for a historic marker honoring theaviator, Clifford Ball that read "a beacon of light in the world of flight," which became the theme of the event.
Filmed and recorded August 16-17 at a retired Air Force base in Plattsburgh, NY (about an hour west, acrossLake Champlain, from the band's home base of Burlington, VT).
Over nine hours of concert and event footage including historic jams from Phish in front of more than 70,000of their fans.
Discs One, Two, and Three present day one of the Clifford Ball (8/16), featuring Phish's first, second and thirdsets, respectively, with the encore following the third set.
Discs Four, Five, and Six present day two (8/17), and also capture all three sets plus encore.
Bonus Disc Seven presents choice rarities including a soundcheck from August 15, their "Flatbed Jam"performed in the wee hours of the morning on the back of a truck, an interview with longtime Phish artistJim Pollock, interviews with Phish, and more.
