Voyage To The Bottom of The Sea - 50th Anniversary Special (1961-2011)
50th Anniversay edition. First released in July, 1961.
The atomic submarine Seaview, designed by the brilliant Admiral Nelson, is being put through its paces on its initial voyage, when the Van Allen Radiation Belt, encompassing the Earth, catches fire. The admiral and crew must find a way to put out the "fire" or watch the world go up in smoke.
Admiral Nelson's plan is rejected by the United Nations, which agrees to do nothing. He proceeds to carry out his play anyway.
Barbara Eden and Peter Lorre play the assistants to Admiral Nelson (Walter Pidgeon). The crew includes Frankie Avalon and Del Monroe ("Koski" here, and "Kowalski" in the TV series).
Irwin Allen is the Director/Writer/Producer. He narrates many radio and tv reports about the disaster.
The 1964-68 TV series used the same sets and basic concepts.
Voyage chronicled the adventures of the world's first privately owned nuclear submarine, the SSRN Seaview. Designed by Admiral Harriman Nelson, she was a tool of oceanographic research for the Nelson Institute of Marine Research. Though the show is known for its many "monster" episodes, like the movie, many other plots were veiled commentaries of what was happening in the news. Such plotlines as nuclear doomsday, pollution of natural resources, foreign threat, independence, and theft of American technology are all still relevant today.
