Growing Slowly Insane: 14 Psychedelic Unknowns - VA (1994) [Rec. 1966-71]
Psychedelic Rock | MP3 320 kbps | 99 MB | 42 min.
Killer comp of brown acid music, mostly by bands obscure enough that I haven't heard of them. The musicians on the first two tracks are fairly well known, and the last track appeared on an Arf! Arf! comp (which maybe hadn't been released at the time this came out, to be fair), but everything in between is totally new to me. There are some slight detours from the subject manner- The Music Fair's "Councilman Jones" is a Chappaquiddick riff, and the last track is an instrumental- but the songs pretty much all convey a certain mood (that being minor-key bad trip music). In fact, it's surprising to me how well it evokes that mood- I've never done acid and wasn't around for the '60s, but it's still very easy for me to relate to this music. Standouts for me are the tracks by "Things to Come" and "Pleasure". Also, the name "Hamilton Streetcar" is comically shameless. Could they possibly have come up with a more derivative name? Oh, I guess it's worth noting in passing that just about all the tracks here were dubbed from incredibly beat-up, ***ly vinyl. While I admit it would be nice to hear these songs in something approaching decent fidelity, these songs do sound terrible in a way that enhances their effect for me. It's hard to be bummed out by a CD the same way you can by a ***ly old 45. I remember reading once that Frank Zappa toyed with the idea of overdubbing 45 RPM ***le onto "Cruising with Ruben and the Jets"- I'm not sure it would've worked, but I understand why he had the idea. : ~ rushomancy RYM
Jake Holmes, track 02, is supposed to be the writer of Dazed & Confused, but never received any royalties from Messrs. Page & Co, who surely could have afforded to pay them from what they made from the song.
Very rare collection of psychedelic bands, re-released in 1994 on the "Timothy's Brain" label,
with very dark material. Recordings are usually from vinyl with some pops and clicks, but it is worth getting to know this CD, out of the print for several years. First released as Psychedelic Unknowns Vol.11.
