I was among the thousands who braved the Docklands rainstorm back in 88 to see what we thought might be the only opportunity to see JMJ play live. Still got the t-shirt, complete with the crossed out and overprinted cancelled date when Newham Council wouldn't grant a licence!
It was a momentous night, with fanstastic lightshows, lasers and fireworks. Sure, the musical performance was mostly mimed (the laserharp especially - it was a huge visual and clearly out of time with the soundtrack), but it wasn't just about the sound - it was the whole show. The derelict warehouse behind the dock that was lit inside to look like it was on fire (it's still there opposite Excel, and still waiting to be renovated), the massive 3m diameter spotlights that caused London City Airport to be closed for the evening, the barges full of fireworks that weren't matched until the abolition of the GLC and the Millennium celebrations, the kids' choir, the whole shooting match.
The video hasn't been remastered to synchronise the sound and visuals - and it's easy to sneer in these days of instant computerised 32-track perfection - but this was twenty years ago, when SMPTE/MIDI was in its infancy and no one had ever put on a show like this.
