Post Description

***By Request***

From the Swiss town of Zürich, for a Celtic Frost fanatic like yours truly this is hallowed soil, hails the powertrio 69 Chambers. And let me tell you that the front cover is stimulating. It shows bandleader Nina Treml naked in a kind of tub filled with charcoal? But the tattoo brings me these fantasies of being tattooed on intimate places by Kat von D? Yeah male fantasy is a quite odd thing in the study of human consciousness.

But it doesn?t say anything about the musical qualities of 69 Chambers. Like I said, they are a powertrio that is inspired greatly by stoner, grunge and metal. The production was lead by Tommy Vetterli, better known as Tommy T. Baron of the Swiss techno thrash band Coroner. You cannot compare 69 Chambers with them, but maybe this production job will bring Tommy back into the writing mode, preferably with Ron Broder and Marky Edelmann.

The opening track ?Day Of The Locust? is a great example of the crossover between stoner, grunge and metal. Because in atmosphere you can compare 69 Chambers best with bands like Kyuss, Soundgarden and Black Sabbath, with female vocals to be exact. 69 Chambers writes songs, these are tracks with a head and a tail, couplets, chorus, bridges and an ending. And the songs have the strength to stick with you. Even when the band shows up with weird lines like in ?Return Of The Repressed? or when Nina Treml does an attempt at grunting, like in ?Judas Goat?.

However the cd sounds fantastic and the songs are very catchy, the level of the arrangement caves in around ?The Collapse Of Time And Space?. You get around three average songs to get through, before the quality level is restored with ?Final Momento?, but after that the whole thing collapses like a house of cards. Also something I noticed is that Nina keeps on the safe side vocally. You will not hear an outcry anywhere or a nice emulation, the vocals remain in service of the songs. Not that it?s bad, but there is no surprise as well. Seen as a whole, this debut is not bad at all. I still listen to it with enough pleasure, and the cover of the cd brings me pleasure in a more erotic way? I guess that it will be the couch this weekend.
