After Joes infiltrate a Cobra stronghold, Cobra Commander told Destro to work with Dr. Mindbender to create the project together but Destro disagreed and he pretended as a whistleblower to tell Joes where Dr. Mindbender is so he handled his project to Commander. After Joes failed, Dr. Mindbender revealed Destro's competition and Commander decided to showed up himself as he sics his giant cobra Serpentor on Destro for his betrayal. He was forced his company absorbed into Cobra Industries, James McCullen became... Destro as he was placed with a mask.
