Duncan Browne and the music of Travelling Man

When I did those marathon posts about the canal-based TV series drama series Travelling Man (here 1 and here 2) I never mentioned the haunting pan-pipery music to the series, by Duncan Browne.

I need to rectify the oversight.

Travelling Man coverThis page on a Duncan Browne tribute site contains notes by the director, Sebastian Graham-Jones, about the music to the series, released as an album in 1984.

(See the album cover, right, showing what looks like the Bosley locks on the Macclesfield Canal.)

The whole Duncan Browne tribute website links to lots of other stuff by the musician, and much other background material.

In the late 1970s and early 80s I was obsessed with sound quality - unhealthily so, looking back. But I remember that his music was so well played and recorded that it was superb demonstration material for top-quality hi-fi.

Streets of Fire, in particular, was a very popular album, heard a lot wherever hi-fi enthusiasts were gathered.

In fact, just listening to Fauvette now takes me back to a better time of recorded music. The picture quality might look dreadful, the video direction a bit hammy and learn-on-the-job, the fashions a bit strange, but sound quality has got much worse in the years since.

On a good system with a good recording you can hear every pluck, every breath, where each musical note started and stopped and the silence in between the notes. It's a joy to listen to.
