De jonge kruimeldief Michel (Belmondo) probeert op Humphrey Bogart te lijken. Onderweg naar Parijs steelt hij een auto en vermoordt een agent. Eenmaal naar de lichtstad gevlucht, krijgt hij een relatie met de Amerikaanse Patricia. Zij ontpopt zich sneller dan hem lief is als een vreselijke femme fatale. Tussen de twee ontstaat een amoureuze verhouding. Ondertussen zit de politie Michel op de hielen. Hij weet dat hij dit niet eeuwig volhoudt, en hij neemt steeds meer risico's...
