Gerry and the Pacemakers
Britse popgroep
De Britse popgroep Gerry and the Pacemakers werd in 1959 opgericht door de zanger en gitarist Gerry Marsden (1942). Verder bestond Gerry and the Pacemakers uit zijn broer Freddy Marsden (drums) en Les Chadwick (bas). Twee jaar later werd de pianist Les Maquire aan de band toegevoegd.

You 'll never walk alone
Gerry and the Pacemakers hadden veel gemeen met The Beatles: Ze speelden in het zelfde clubcircuit, bezochten Hamburg en werden ook op weg geholpen door Brian Epstein en George Martin.
Aanvankelijk waren Gerry and the Pacemakers ook bijna even succesvol. Ze hadden drie nummer één hits achter elkaar: "How do you do it", "I like it" en "You 'll never walk alone".
Ferry cross the Mersey

Net als The Beatles probeerden Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1964 voet aan de grond te krijgen in de Verenigde Staten. Ook trad Gerry and the Pacemakers op in de show van Ed Sullivan, maar deze groep bleek over minder charisma te beschikken als The Beatles.
"Ferry cross the Mersey" was de titelsong van een film over de muziekcultuur in Liverpool. Dit nummer wordt nog vaak gebruikt in documentaires over de "Britse Invasie".
Na 1964 bleek Gerry Marsden niet in staat om de muziek van Gerry and the Pacemakers op een hoger niveau te brengen en in 1966 werd de groep ontbonden.
