When catching specimen carp, there are times when the hook bait will be in the water for several hours, therefore it is important to use a bait that is long lasting, durable and something that won’t break up after being submerged in water for many hours.

Specimen carp anglers specifically target carp, and whilst a large tench, bream or catfish is often a nice surprise to the net, nuisance fish such as roach, skimmers and the like are not welcome. In order to avoid the nuisance fish specimen carp anglers will often use a bait that nuisance fish are not likely to want to eat, which unfortunately limits the baits available since nuisance fish will consume almost anything that hits the water.
