"Celebrated author Ken Kesey (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) was the chief perpetrator of the Merry Pranksters, a rag-tag bunch of like-minded spirits who embraced the cultural mayhem of the mid '60s and sought common enlightenment through L.S.D. One of their most inspired japes was to take a bus trip-cum-rolling revolution across the United States. Although having the foresight to equip the bus with cameras and sound equipment, the Pranksters proved to be totally lacking in the fundamentals of filmmaking, and after some 40 years of trying to make sense of the cinematic soup, Kesey finally threw in the towel.
Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side) and his longtime editor Alison Ellwood hit upon the idea of editing the veritable treasure trove of footage to the commentary of its Dramatis Personae (including Jack Kerouac's hell-raiser sidekick Neal Cassady, who alarmingly drove the bus for much of the way) as they viewed it. Adorning the results with a music track that perfectly encapsulates the era-Dion, Ike Turner, John Coltrane-the directors have instilled the film with an appropriate home-movie aesthetic, as all aboard randomly turn on, tune in, and drop out."
